Celebrate Heart Health Month!

Celebrate Heart Health Month!

Feb 26, '21
Valentine's Day isn't the only heart-themed celebration this month! February is American Heart Month and we're here with easy to follow tips to make sure you have everything you need to keep your healthy heart ticking for years and years to come.  After all, you want to be spending many more special occasions with the ones you love!

    1. Visit your doctor!
You need to have a baseline screening, especially for diabetes. Most people don’t even know they have it, and it can sometimes be treatable with a heart healthy diet and exercise for cardiovascular endurance—things you can work on. High blood sugar damages the arteries and increases your chance of heart disease. Making sure to see your doctor regularly to keep tabs on your blood sugar, cholesterol, and overall health can prevent unwanted hospital visits in the future. If you do suspect issues with your heart health, however, don't delay! Regardless of any fear of hospitals you may have (especially during pandemic times), the American Heart Association encourages you to have symptoms looked at as part of their "Don't Die of Doubt" campaign: a reminder that hospitals are still the safest place to go if you experience sudden heart-related issues.
    2. Get some sleep!
Aim for at least 7 hours. Not only will you have more energy and a clearer mind, but there are also actual physical health benefits, like less calcium in your arteries. Make sure your sleep is good sleep, too! If you’re restless, struggling, or staring at the ceiling counting sheep all night, check-in with your doctor.
    3. Eat real, heart healthy foods!
And limit the drinks—not only alcohol, but also sugary drinks like soda and fruit juices. These drinks add calories quickly, but they rarely provide any nutritional value, so you’re likely to end up eating more food anyway. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds should be at the top of your grocery list to help you maintain a healthy weight.
    4. Be happy!
Your heart thrives when you are doing things you enjoy and spending time with people you love. Laugh with your friends (even if it's just through a phone call or video chat), practice yoga or meditation--whatever makes you happy. It’s good for you! Finding your happy place reduces stress, which means the release of stress hormones (like cortisol) in your body is also reduced, and you thus decrease the risk factors that lead to heart disease.
    5. Get moving!
Literally, every step counts! Whether it’s standing at your desk instead of sitting, parking a little farther from your destination, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, it adds up. It’s not enough to exercise for 30 minutes a day and then sit the rest of the time. Make it a point to keep moving and reap the full benefits of exercise! The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. That can mean a brisk walk, a bike ride, or even gardening! Make your heart exercise fun by adding some music or podcasts to the mix while you're fitting in your daily activity. Your phone is perfect for keeping your playlist or fitness apps at the ready and a hands-free accessory to keep that phone protected and within reach is a must! Armpocket armbands fit any size phone (even in a protective case!) and are completely weather-, sweat-, and splash-proof! With vented, no-slip straps and memory foam padding, Armpocket is the most comfortable armband specifically designed for extended wear. With the right gear, regular exercise is a breeze and you'll be meeting your activity goals in no time!
